Magic Moments Foundation
In 2017 I received a Telstra scholarship to attend the Magic Moments Foundation Youth Leadership & Business Summit in Sydney. Over the four days I participated in workshops and group activities on communication, entrepreneurship, problem solving, vulnerability, leadership & teamwork. Attending this event launched my passion for leadership and community work. My team one the prize for best small business pitch with an app designed to educate parents on communicating with teenagers. At the conclusion of the conference, I was awarded the Leader of the Week for my team. I went on to return to the conference in 2018 as a Graduate delegate and mentor the new delegates attending.
Border to Beach
In 2018 I participated in The Scots School Albury's outdoor education program for Year 9 students - Border to Beach. The program is designed to teach tenacity, resilience and resourcefulness through physical challenge and collaborative pursuit, where groups of year 9 students hike & canoe across a pre-determined track. I was the staff team leader for my group of students. This experience taught me to ‘lead from behind.’ My job was not to lead the group head on, provide students the answers or complete tasks for them. Rather, I saw my job as to guide their decision-making processes, provide encouragement during times of challenge & when needed mediate disagreements between students.
After the seven days, I found I had built strong bonds with each of the students in my group and understood their strengths & weaknesses. I could anticipate how each student may react when presented with different challenges, and how they would individually contribute to team exercises. This experience provided me with invaluable leadership skills & understanding I would later rely on in my role as NAAUC Vice President and when mentoring young people at Green Supercamp Australia.
Green Supercamp Australia
In 2021 I volunteered for Green Supercamp Australia as a Team Leader at their Senior Forum at Cave Hill Creek in regional Victoria. The 7-day camp aims to improve students learning skills for school and enhance their communication and relationship skills. As a Team Leader I was a mentor for my group of campers, helping them through challenging tasks, team-building activities and setting personal goals. A highlight for me during this experience was mentoring a 14 year old girl with cerebral palsy and empowering her to have equal participation in all camp activities, as any other camper would have. To watch her grow throughout the week, make new friends and set goals for her future was inspiring for all.
